tom was already old when the Mets acquired him.he had a knuckleball he relied upon.

Sturdivant was a sixteen game winner for the Yankees one year. In 1962, he pitched for the Pirates. The Mets had lost nine in a row to start the 62 season. On a Monday night in Pittsburgh Jay Hook was matched up against Tom Sturdivant. The Mets won their first game 9-1. Sturdivant was signed by the Mets after he had been released by I think the A's. He became the first free agent signed in Mets history.

Tom Sturdivant pitched a complete game six-hitter as the Yankees beat Brooklyn in game four of the 1956 World Series. This allowed the Yanks to even the series at 2-2 after they had lost the first two games at Ebbets Field. The next day Don Larsen pitched his perfect game.
Actually, Sturdivant won 16 games for the Yankees twice. In 1956-57, Sturdivant was a combined 32-14. The rest of his career he was 27-37.

In Jim Bunning's 1964 perfect game, Tom pitched the final three innings for the Mets. It was he that John Stephenson pinch-hit for in the ninth and struck out to end the game. He then hurled one inning of the second game of that day's doubleheader and never pitched again in the major leagues.
Tom's appearance in the Bunning classic made him a connecting point to the last previous perfect game. He was a teammate of Don Larsen in 1956 and even won the fourth game of that World Series. In 1961, Sturdivant joined the Pirates to become teammates with Harvey Haddix, who threw twelve perfect innings before losing two years earlier. Tom has a unique linkage to some of the greatest pitched games of all time.
