As a teenager, I recalled some buzz in the papers about Baldwin being a talented prospect. I also remember his September with the Amazin's and my friends and Ithinking he was a pretty good player.

What the $#@#$! happened to a guy that hit .273 and seemed like a no-brainer to make the 1977 club? I'm notsure if he was traded or it was poor judgement among the minor league development team and/or M. DonaldGrant and the DeRoulet brood.

I believe that had Billy been with the team in '77, he and (later) Steve Henderson would've been a great rookie pair that would've offered some hope for the future. Like Hendu, Baldwin had a good blend of speed of power. Strange.

I went to my first night game at Shea Stadium the day that Billy Baldwin hit his only home run as a Met to win the ball game. It was very exciting for a 9 year old! Too bad he didn't play anymore but at least no matter where he goes he'll at least be able to say he hit a walk off home run. I'd buy him a drink.

Stephen,

That game was played on Friday night, September 24, 1976. Billy's pinch-homer came with one out in the bottom of the ninth off veteran RHP Joe Coleman. The Mets had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Baldwin was in the starting lineup the next day against the Cubs and had a single, double, and triple. He drove in two runs and scored one. Billy started again the next day and went 1-for-3 before coming out for pinch-hitter Joe Torre.

Baldwin's final major league appearance was in the first game of a September 28 doubleheader against the Expos at Shea. He flied out to right in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game, but the Mets wound up scoring a run that inning to win the game, 5-4.

Billy stayed in the Mets organization until early 1979, when he was released. The Cleveland Indians picked him up in March, 1979 but he never made it back to the majors after September 28, 1976.
