Share your memories of Orlando Mercado
HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:
Al Pepper
Orlando has three claims to fame:- Only one of four players to hit a grand slam for his first major league hit (Sept. 19, 1982)
- Involved in a game where he committed a passed ball on a strikeout to allow the winning run to score from second (June 19, 1986).
- He's the current bullpen coach for the Anaheim Angels.
He's a great guy. I sent him a letter and he sent me back three autographed baseball cards of himself.

I remember the passed ball in '86 when Mercado was catching for the Rangers. Charlie Hough was pitching.

Orlando is awesome. He's also my cousin, which made it great when he finally came to play for the METS!!! I'd say my best memory & I know one of his, is when he hit a Home Run on his dad's birthday not long after his dad had passed away. I know that night meant alot to him. It's too bad he never got the opportunity he deserved to play as a starter.

About that game when Mercado was with the Rangers and a run scored from second on a passed ball... Charlie Hough had a no-hitter with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Rangers were winning 1-0. A pop fly was hit to left field, and George Wright dropped it for an error. The no-no was still intact with a runner on second. Of course the next guy got a single to drive in the tying run. Mercado let a ball get by him for a passed ball to get the runner to second. In the same at bat, Mercado has a second passed ball, and the runner scores all the way from second for the winning run. Hough pitched a one-hitter, but lost 2-1 on an error, a single, and two passed balls. It was ugly to watch.

I watched Orlando when he was with the Salt Lake Gulls, I enjoyed watching him for many reasons, being a young girl at the time. I still have his minor league baseball card. I also enjoyed watching him play with the Mariners whenever they visited Oakland. I'm happy to see he's with Anaheim, I may have to convert from being a Dodger fan!
