murphy I was at Shea the day Blair gave up McGwire's 50th on his way to 70. First game of a double header. I just want to know what Arizona was thinking when they gave him a huge free agent contract. I know he had a huge year in Detroit in '97, but.... Sent to the Mets with Jorge Fabregas for Bernard Gilkey.
March 29, 2003 He was generic as a long reliever, but we got Blair for two reasons.
A) To move Gilkey's contract so we could play Hundley in left.
B) To give us another potential starter in the event of injuries or ineffectiveness.
Blair did turn in two quality starts for us. One was in the first game of a DH with the Cards at Shea, when McGwire hit his 50th homer of the season. The other was against Montreal, and I believe that was a 1-0 game where the Mets got their run late, and an Expo was thrown out trying to score late in that game. Hundley caught that game, in one of his last catching appearances as a Met.
We eventually traded Blair to Detroit for Joe Randa, who was then swapped for failed OF prospect Juan LeBron, who blew out his arm the next spring training. Randa did very well for the Royals as their 3B for several years.
