Damion July 21, 2006 I love how everyone talks about how old El Duque is. I have heard everything from 37 to 49. By the time the season is over I bet he'll be 60. I am just happy to have him here. Malcontent Met July 21, 2006 Oh great, another Yankee. By signing cross-town Has-Beens, we are quickly becoming the 1996 Yankees. I certainly don't want to win this way. Orlando was a component of the incessant Yankees hype machine that made it unbearable to be a Met fan (sort of like being a Catholic in Ulster). Remember that absurd commercial that fashioned his pitching as a new dance craze? It had Cone in the bathroom of the night club (no, not crying or with his lady friends) trying out the dance. The commercial even had a jungle called “Do El Duque!” Carrie July 24, 2006 Has shown signs he's still got big game performances left in him. David Klein August 10, 2006 Has pitched wonderfully lately winning four in a row, in fact I'd trust him in a playoff game over Glavine. Duque is a bit of a poor mans Pedro changing up his game plan in the middle of the game, and mixing in his offspeed pitches at varying speeds. donna August 23, 2006 Enjoy watching him very much. I have a good chuckle when he fools a hitter with a 50 mph curve then comes back with a 91 mph fastball. jamie August 23, 2006 Hated the Jorge Julio for El Duque trade at first, but have done a 180 on it since. I love the guy he has a lot of guts, and guile, and even at his old age nearly always goes deep into a game. Diamond Dave February 2, 2007 I have a memory of a guy so old he hurt himself jogging in the outfield preparing for one of the biggest and rare Met playoff games in years. So now we are going into 2007 with this guy as our Number 2 starter. I like Omar, but this triggers a memory of a Steve Phillips debacle. Hope he can at least be .500 in '07 but an injury is imminent. Jamey Bumbalo August 7, 2007 I love watching this guy pitch. He gives 100% every time he's on the mound. I love his various windups (how he gets that leg so high, and doesn't kick himself in the face, is amazing), delivery styles, and changes of speed. Davidk August 8, 2007 Has been one of Minaya's best pickups. The guy is like 60 years old, and he continues to throw gems fooling hitters with an assortment of breaking pitches and arm angles. If he would have been healthy last October the Mets would have won it all. Getting rid of that bum Julio for him was a steal. J Money January 21, 2011 When ever I hear Orlando Hernandez's name all I think of is his magical injury a couple of days before the NLDS. Alex June 8, 2023 Hard not to appreciate what Orlando Hernandez did for the Mets. In 2007, at 41 years old, in his final big league season, he won 9 games and had a 3.72 ERA and 116 ERA+. Even more amazingly, he began the year with a 1.94 ERA through his first 8 starts and he maintained an ERA under 3 through his first 15. There was a game in 2006 when he allowed 11 runs in just 4 innings of work, but talk about recovering—his ERA was just 1.69 ERA over his next 6 starts, which took him to the end of the season. He had 9 wins and a 107 ERA+ that year. Of course I remember him more for all the hype when he was with the Yankees, and how can you forget that crazy windup. And here was a guy who truly loved baseball. He played in the minor leagues until 2010, when he was 44 years old. And as a 44-year-old in the Nats system that year, he posted a 1.72 ERA and 12.1 K/9 IP ratio in 15 2/3 innings. Amazing.
