Share your memories of Jeff Conine HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY: Ken August 27, 2007 It sucked that Easley went down after having such a solid year off the bench, but I think that Conine is going to be a real difference maker. He's been here a few games now and has already knocked in some runs and gotten hits off the bench, just what we need. I've always liked ol Conine the Barbarian and if we're fortunate enough to get in the playoffs, I think he's going to play a big part in our success. Steve L. September 16, 2007 He has one of the best nicknames in baseball - Conine the Barbarian. Doc B October 18, 2007 How much does it say about a guy that three different teams brought him back for another tour of duty! He must be a good person to have both on and off the field. Pete H. October 18, 2007 When we acquired him, they said Conine brought a veteran presence and professionalism to the Mets bench. Well that's all he brought because he stunk. Anonymous McGee February 23, 2008 Unfortunately, had nothing left when the Mets acquired him. At least he finished his career with a team that had a chance to compete instead of rotting in Cincinnati. Metsgeek April 26, 2009 Did nothing for the Mets but was a great leader on the field and the players said they'd miss him. Glad he was on a part of the family!! Ethan Zien December 6, 2012 Because I hate myself I was looking at the box score from the final game of '07, he went 0-2, and that is when I learned he was ever on the Mets Alex August 9, 2022 In the grand scheme of things, Jeff Conine was a very good—and very underappreciated—ballplayer. He finished with over 200 home runs, hitting 20+ three times. He had nearly 2,000 hits. He hit better than .300 four times. He was an All-Star twice. To recognize his fine career, the Hall of Fame put him on the ballot in 2013; he received no votes. By the time he reached the Mets in 2007, he was 41 years old. He was done—though, in his defense, he was hitting .265 with the Reds when we traded for him. Neither of the guys we sent away ever reached the majors, so we didn't lose much in acquiring Conine. He actually had a hit and a RBI in his first at-bat with New York. He hit .175 after that and was gone from the big leagues following the season. I prefer to remember Conine for what he did as a whole because, honestly, his time with New York was entirely forgettable.
