If you thought at the beginning of the 2008 season, that Luis Ayala would be coming out of the bullpen to get saves in the heat of the pennant race, you would have been committed.
Win or lose, this has been one weird year for the Mets. Good luck and God's speed to Luis because we're going to need him.

The guy's barely here and already has seven saves! And we got him for Anderson Hernandez, who (face it) was never going to make it with the Mets. This may turn out to be the most important Met late-season acquisition since Donn Clendenon. (Here's hoping!)

Let's hope the Mets cut Ayala loose. He pitched well 2003-2005 (highest ERA: 2.92). But he was terrible with the Nationals and the Mets--a disaster. It's surely not politically correct to say this, but if this guy didn't have a Hispanic name, would he be a Met?

If Benny Ayala was a pitcher, he would have pitched better than him. He was supposed to be "insurance" but turned out to be the opposite!

It's 2008. I graduate high school. My graduation gift is a Mets game at Shea Stadium -- I had never been and time was running out. It was to be demolished after that season and replaced by Citi Field.
The anticipation is incredible. I spend what seems like the entire evening beforehand preparing to get autographs in person. My binder is filled with Mets cards. I'm ready.
The day of the game arrives. It rains earlier in the day; no batting practice. No autographs then.
No one is signing at all once we're let in.
My dad takes my souvenir program and goes down in the direction of the bullpen, while I wait by the dugout.
A little while later, my dad comes back with a signature on the program.
It belonged to New York Mets legend Luis Ayala.
And that was the only autograph I got that day.
