He was just sent down. My first memory of Ankiel is of his pitching wildly against the Mets in the 2000 postseason. My last memory of Ankiel will be of his swinging wildly for the Mets in the 2013 regular season.

I'm probably one of the few folks whose primary memory of Rick Ankiel is from when he was in the minor leagues, reshaping his career as an outfielder.
I remember one day in 2006 thinking to myself, "hey, whatever happened to Rick Ankiel?" I looked him up and saw that he had 30-plus home runs at Triple A that year... I was stunned at that, because the last I'd really heard about him, he was failing out of the Cardinals rotation.
So I went to one of my favorite baseball forums and started trumpeting Rick Ankiel, touting his numbers on the farm and asking if they thought he'd make a comeback. They were mostly naysayers: "He's playing in a high offense minor league," "his numbers are inflated," etc. But I thought he had a chance.
So did I call Rick Ankiel's miraculous comeback before anyone else? Well, I hate to brag, but...
Anyway, I also remember him from his time with the Mets. It was brief and uneventful; I saw him play a couple games on TV. That's about it.

I've written Rick Ankiel six through-the-mail autograph requests in my time, the first in 2006 through the Cardinals and most recently in 2019 through his home address. He's signed twice for me, both in 2007 through the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. The first time he signed 4 cards in 10 days, the second time he signed 1 card in 19 days. He's never been much of a signer, but he was signing like crazy that year.
2007 was the year he resurfaced in the majors as an outfielder. It's amazing that he was still only 27 at the time—you'd think he must've been ancient by the way people wrote him off after he flopped as a pitcher and then he disappeared. Not so, he was still pretty young. His 2007-2008 comeback with the Cardinals was quite impressive as his 162-game average was 35 home runs and 107 RBI those years.
I noticed that one of his two Mets home runs came off none other than a Cardinals pitcher, the solid but short-lived Seth Maness.
