When they ditched him partway through the 2017 campaign, his average was poor (.228), but he still had a solid 116 OPS+. All they received in return was the very inconsequential Jacob Rhame.

I also saw him play live on July 19, 2015. That day, the Mets and Cardinals played an 18-inning game in St. Louis that seemed to drag on and on and on. Skip ahead to the top of the 18th. One (?) out. Curtis Granderson is on third, Weak-hitting Eric Campbell is at the dish. The Mets have already scored once in the inning, putting them up 2-1, so another run would give them some cushion.

I say to my dad, who was with there with me, "now would be the perfect time for a suicide squeeze."

And guess what? Not a moment later Granderson comes bolting down the line and Campbell lays down a bunt, with Granderson scoring easily and Campbell making it safely to first. I called the squeeze!

He was always a good signer through-the-mail during his playing days, as well. In 2008, he signed three things for me in 21 days care of the Tigers.

Hopefully he gets at least a couple votes for the Hall when his time comes.
