HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Hot Foot

For some inexplicable reason, the Mets brought this guy up from high Single-A ball to pitch in a road game in Toronto, in 2015.

I revisited his single appearance as a Met, and Ron Darling was right when he said they were "throwing him to the wolves." His first batters were Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion. Just another great idea from the mind of Terry Collins. Put a guy from Single A to face the heart of the order in his first MLB appearance as see what happens...

Watching Akeel's outing, he quickly lost whatever composure he might have had when he walked his first batter on a 3-2 curveball, a terrible pitch call by Travis d'Arnaud that Ron Darling pointed out. You don't ask a guy from Single A to throw a 3-2 curveball.

He had no command of his curve and the Blue Jays were fouling off his best 94 MPH fastballs. He did get a double play ball, but Dilson Herrera botched the second out with a careless throw to first that drew Lucas Duda off the bag. Then, Morris hurt his cause by not covering first on a bunt that Duda fielded. Right then, Morris should have been taken out of the game, but Terry Collins wanted to see more.

In spite of this, he Mets still won the division in 2015, so Akeel's one bloody outing at Rogers Center (more like the Coliseum in Rome) didn't cost the Mets too much. However, his ERA of 67.50 had me wondering if it was the worst Mets pitching performance ever. I did some digging, and in the history of the franchise, it's close.

There's only one worse outing (including position players) and it's Garrett Olson from 2012, who gave up 4 runs in one third of an inning for an ERA of 108.00. After Olson comes Morris, and again, that's counting position players.

Morris' outing was even worse than Jose Reyes' (the worst Mets position player pitcher of all time) 54.00 ERA. Like Akeel, Jose also gave up five runs, but he pitched a full inning as opposed to the two thirds of an inning that Akeel lasted.

It should be noted that in 2021, Stephen Tarpley had an ERA of infinity, but he only gave up two runs, and in 1973 Bob Apodaca also had an ERA of infinity but he only gave up one run.

Also in 2021, Thomas Szapucki challenged Akeel for the runner up spot with a 60.75 ERA, but came up short.
