Can you imagine having to go through life with a surname like "Bastardo"? This pitcher was terrible on the Mets as a relief pitcher. Thankfully, Sanday Alderson was able to unload him back onto the Pirates for former Met Jon Niese.

Yes, Antonio should have seriously considered getting a court-ordered name change for THAT surname.
And, regardless of that name, Antonio did not pitch well for the Mets during his time here.

A terrible signing. The Mets had a weak 'pen in their World Series year of 2015, so to fortify it for 2016 they brought on guys like Bastardo and Jim Henderson??
Bastardo was an every-other-year pitcher. He'd have a bad year then a good year. Well, 2015 was his good year, so, predictably, 2016 was a bad year.
If you cherry pick his numbers, they don't look awful. He averaged less than a hit allowed per inning and more than a K per frame. But he surrendered way too many home runs and walks. Astonishingly, he didn't lose a single game with the Mets, despite a 4.74 ERA.

I spent much of 2016 listening to the Mets broadcasters struggling not to make a pun on Bastardo's name, particularly when Bastardo himself was struggling. Of course they were under orders not to touch the guy's name, and it would've been very inappropriate to make even the lightest gag about it. But think of Howie Rose's delight in J.J. Putz, and all the delight of Abbott and Costello fans that we briefly had a player named Hu, and you sense a double standard. When Bastardo took the mound, it was as if the Blessed Virgin Mother were pitching for the Mets.
