May 6, 2008 Broke up no-hit bid by future Tiger Les Cain in 1970. Started with S.F. Giants organization. Line drive hitter with good eye but not much pop.
May 29, 2008 I played against Don two consecutive seasons while he was in the Giants organization. I have to believe a major league team could have used him. He was an outstanding defensive first baseman and, while not overly powerful, was a solid switch-hitter with some pop in his bat that most years hit near .300. He usually hit directly behind the clean-up hitter (in one case that was Ollie Brown and his 40 homers), which made a pitcher want to not walk anyone ahead of Don. Don was a solid all-around player.
June 25, 2008 I played in the Giants Organization from 1965 to 1970 and Don Engbers was a teammate of mine. He was one of the best defensive first basemen that I ever played with. He saved me many a run with that glove of his. He was a decent hitter too. Good eye and good contact, could have played in the Bigs, but I think teams outsmart themselves sometimes thinking that they have to have power on the corners.
