I couldn't understand why Cleveland retired his uniform number until I read his obit recently. I thought he was a journeyman; but he was a really good pitcher. Anyone who made Babe Ruth and Joe Dimaggio look silly at the plate gets my vote for the Hall of Fame.

Mel Harder was also a first-rate pitching coach who really knew how to teach, especially the curveball.
He resigned after that one season with the Mets in '64 to take an offer with the Cubs. I read that he had been "thinking over his plans." He was replaced by Warren Spahn.

In a previous life, I thought Mel Harder would pitch forever. I could not imagine a world without Mel Harder in the Indians' rotation.
Mel was one of the best ever from 1933 to 1935. Great pitcher who pitched until 1947 and was the pitching coach of the 1948 World Series Champs.
