In 2005, The Crane Pool Forum revived a classic Mets tradition that had been dormant (and largely forgotten) for about a quarter century: The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award.
In the late 1970's, at the conclusion of every Mets broadcast, Mets announcers Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy, and Ralph Kiner would award points to the game's top performers. The rules were simple: No more than 10 points could be awarded per game, and no individual player could get more than 6 points.

The reincarnated Schaefer Awards do have a 21st Century spin, however. Some CPF members make Schaefer voting a science, and award fractional points to player. Lindsey Nelson, we're sure, never awarded any player 2.36 points, but in the Crane Pool Forum, it's a common occurrence.
