METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE AUGUST 12, 1971 GAME:

November 21, 2024
In one of his worst starts as a Met, Nolan Ryan lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walking 4 and giving up 3 runs before making way for Charlie Williams. That was all the Padres would need, however, as the Mets were shutout for the 3rd time in their last 4 games.
This was only 1 of 2 times Ryan failed to make it out of the 1st inning as a Met starter. He's now lost 6 of his last 7 decisions, posting a 5.92 ERA over that span. Without the luxury of hindsight, it was pretty clear to see why the Mets were open to the prospect of trading him during the offseason.
Meanwhile, the Mets offense continued to sputter. The shutout brought their streak to 22 consecutive innings without scoring a run. All 6 of their hits went for singles in this game, though they did have quite a few hard hit line drives right at people, so there was some hard luck at play too. Steve Arlin, who led the NL with 19 losses in 1971, earned the shutout victory.
Arlin also had a triple in the game. He was 1 of 4 pitchers to hit a triple against the Mets during the season. To show you how much the game changed over the years, only 2 pitchers hit a triple vs. the Mets during the entire decade of the 2010s: Travis Wood for Cincinnati in 2010, and Tanner Roark for Washington in 2018.
Now it's your turn! Tell us what you remember of this game:
Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
