METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE APRIL 25, 1972 GAME:

With the Mets trailing 1-0 in the 7th inning, Tommie Agee and Rusty Staub led off with back-to-back singles. After a Cleon Jones pop out, the Padres tried to pickoff Agee at 2B, but, after getting Tommy in a rundown, second baseman Derrel Thomas threw wildly to third, allowing Agee to race home and Staub to go all the way to third. Jim Fregosi then flew out, and Ed Kranepool popped up to RF next to look like the final out. However, RF Larry Stahl dropped the ball, scoring Staub and putting the Mets ahead 2-1. It's an ugly way to take the lead, but take what you can get.
Buzz Capra, making his first career start, came out in favor of Chuck Taylor, and Taylor shut out the Padres the rest of the way to secure his first save as a Met, and give Capra his first big-league win. Ollie Brown did give Taylor a scare in the 7th when he hit one high off the wall that was mere inches away from a game-tying homer, but it instead went for a double and he was stranded on second base.
You really gotta feel for Padres starter Steve Arlin. A season after leading the NL in losses, he's now begun the 1972 season with losses in each of his first 3 starts, despite holding a 1.80 ERA. The Padres had such a bad offense that if the pitching wasn't throwing a shutout, there was hardly any chance to get a win.

Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
