METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE OCTOBER 9, 1973 GAME:

Isn't this the game where Pete Rose won it for the Reds with an extra-inning home run? I think it was the day after the Rose-Harrelson fight. I will never forget how happy Pete Rose looked when he hit that home run; he was easy to hate in those days.

This was the game when Rusty Staub made that great catch in right field, where he slammed into the wall and robbed Dan Dressien of an extra base hit. Unfortunately he separated his shoulder in the process. If he was 100% in the World Series, who knows what might have been. Rusty Staub was truly the M.V.P. of the series.

Milner grounded out to Pedro Borbon to end the game, not Joe Morgan. Retrosheet is wrong.

Raced home from school at 3 to watch last few innings and Rose running around with his fist in the air. The noise coming from the Reds dugout was really apparent on Channel 9.

This game was almost a mirror image of Game 1. The Mets jump out to an early 1-0 lead, but a couple of late home runs give the Reds the win. Rose tied it in the 8th inning of Game 1, and wins it with a 12th-inning homer in Game 4. He was easy to hate, but also easy to respect.
When Tony Perez hit his home run in the 7th, it was his first hit of the series. He had started 0-for-14. The Reds also had golden opportunities to score when they loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th and 2 outs in the 10th, but failed to score both times as Tug McGraw walked the tightrope to get out of trouble. The Reds also put 2 on with 1 out in the 11th but McGraw got out of that too.
To this point in the series, the Reds have scored 6 runs. Five of those runs have come courtesy of solo homers.
But as was the case in Game 1 and most of Game 2, the Mets offense once again fell asleep. Over 12 innings they managed just 3 singles, 2 by Felix Millan. Wayne Garrett and Bud Harrelson both only have 1 hit over the first 4 games, and now that Staub is seeing stars after slamming into the wall, it seems like runs are going to be hard to come by in Game 5. Good thing it'll be Seaver on the mound, who will need to pitch the game of his life if the Mets are to advance.
Oh, and Bill Pulsipher was born on this day.

We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,

Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
