METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE AUGUST 28, 1999 GAME:

The Mets held a lead at 2 different times in this game but Orel Hershiser couldn't hold it either time, ultimately tiring out in the 6th inning when the Diamondbacks used 4 singles to cash in 2 runs and tie the score at 3-3. Dennis Cook then gave up the go-ahead run on an RBI double to Jay Bell in the 7th (a spot where Turk Wendell should have probably been summoned), and Pat Mahomes allowed a homer to Matt Williams in the 8th, giving Matt Mantei plenty of cushion to lock up the save as he struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in the 9th.
Armando Reynoso beat his former team for the second time in 1999, going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs (though 2 were unearned due to a Bell error in the 6th). However, this would be Reynoso's final win of the year, as he went 0-4 with an 8.85 ERA over the remainder of the season and wouldn't even appear when the Mets and D'Backs squared off in the NLDS.
Not much else to say about this one. I watched it back on an old FX Saturday night broadcast, with Matt Vasgersian calling the game alongside Ken Brett. I feel dumb for saying this, but I had no idea who Brett was. Came to find out he had a 14-year Major League career and was George Brett's older brother. I wasn't really a fan of his style, reminding me a lot of how super-critical Tim McCarver would be over silly little things. For example, he got on Rickey Henderson's case for not running hard to break up a force out in the 1st inning when the ball was going to beat him to the base by 20 feet even if he did. But I was still sad to learn he'd pass away only 4 years later from brain cancer, something he had been dealing with since 1997.
Now it's your turn! Tell us what you remember of this game:
Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
