METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE SEPTEMBER 11, 1999 GAME:

Ismael Valdes basically gave the game away. I think he loaded the bases with three walks in the first inning. Hundley hit his first home run against his former team and Grudzielanek added a triple but the Mets seemed to be in control from the beginning. Yoshii was ok, definately not great, but good enough against LA's over anxious lineup. Just to many righties on that team. Thank God for Shawn Green!

In response to John's comment, Valdes was certainly far from sharp. He walked 5 and allowed 8 hits, departing when the first 5 batters he faced reached base in the 6th. And though John is right that Valdes walked the bases loaded in the first inning, the Mets still failed to score. They didn't get on the board until the 3rd when Mike Piazza touched up his former team with a 2-run homer. It was his 3rd homer in his last 4 games, and his 4th against L.A. since getting traded the previous year. Mike finished the game 4-for-4 with a walk.
Meanwhile, Yoshii held a formidable Dodger lineup in check, going 7 strong innings for his second-to-last win as a Met. He received some great defensive help in the game, most notably from Darryl Hamilton in the 1st inning. Gary Sheffield pounded a liner to center field that Hamilton caught while leaping into the outfield fence, with his left knee getting the brunt of the collision. He stayed down for a while after the catch but remained in the game, although he was taken out the next inning. Thankfully, he only missed one game and didn't show any signs of lingering injury afterward, as he played in all of the Mets remaining 19 games of the regular season.

Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
