This was the specifically designated D-Wright retirement game. If the Wilpons' plan was to sell out the game, it worked. The crowd was, without a doubt, the largest I had ever been a part of. During warmups, David and Jose were running around with each other and the place was going nuts. It was the end of an era for the Mets, this was going to be an emotional night.
David's daughter Olivia Shea threw out the first pitch (it wasn't half bad) and he took one final run, leading the team out the dugout, to his property at third base.
He walked in his first at-bat, fielded a grounder showing flashes of vintage Wright, and unfortunately popped out in his last at-bat. Marlins first baseman Peter O'Brien probably could have let it drop, and the crowd let him hear it the whole night. After that, it was over. He walked off the field for one last time, to an ovation that seemed to never end. We can't all have good endings, but I'm sure if you asked David he couldn't have been happier.
The game droned on, Citi still full because he was making a speech afterward. It was a meaningless game against the Marlins, of all teams, but the crowd treated it like a playoff game. It started to get restless, in the 11th or 12th there was actually a fight near my section. If Austin Jackson hadn't doubled to end it, who knows how long the game would've been.
Howie Rose and Wright combined together to make an excellent final sendoff, and his speech to the fans was heartfelt. Everyone was sad to see David go, but we couldn't have asked for anything more from him.
Please note:
We're looking for your comments about this specific
game. We've had people use this space to share their thoughts on how the
current season is going, or on ways that the Mets can improve the team.
Such comments, unless in the context of
this particular game,
will be considered off-topic and will be removed.
Example One
The Mets suck! They need to trade Smith and get somebody like
Jones.
This comment is off-topic and will be removed. It has nothing to do with
any specific game. But here's an acceptable alternative:
Example Two
The Mets suck! Smith made three errors in this game, and hit into a
double play, and the Mets blew a 5-0 lead. They need to get rid of Smith
and get somebody like Jones.
See the difference? Here you're getting the same point across, but it's in
the proper context. We wouldn't consider this message to be off-topic, and
we would let it remain.
We do appreciate anybody who takes the time to share their thoughts on our
site, and we hate to remove anybody's postings. But if we didn't take
steps to ensure that only on-topic messages were retained, The Ultimate
Mets Database would become a confusing jumble of unrelated comments,
and would thus be less enjoyable to visitors like you.
Thank you!
