My 9th Opening Day Game! Thor was great! 6 runs in the 7th! LETS GO METS!

This was the coldest game I was ever at, but I have enough pride for this team that I refused to wear nothing other than a Syndergaard jersey. All the blankets were sold out anyway. I thought more people would have come out to see the return of Zack, who had a promising first inning. Then Grandy singled in a run in the bottom of the first inning, and in the second, the cool energy was taken out of the ballpark when Wheeler let up three runs. Left in the fifth inning.

During the previous week, Noah refused an MRI of his arm, and this, his very next start, throws out his arm in the second inning and was lost for the season. Don't know what the MRI would have shown but he got MRI the next day.

This was a close, high-scoring battle before the Nationals blew it wide open. Washington had a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning when the roof caved in completely on the Mets. The Nats erupted for thirteen runs on twelve hits against three relievers from the fourth to the seventh. It got so out of hand that reserve catcher Kevin Plawecki had to be called in to pitch. Plawecki fared no better in the eighth with three Nationals homers coming off him to make things just downright laughable. A game that had the look of an offensive thriller had disintegrated into total disaster.

This was Terry Collins' 1,000th game as Mets manager. The team celebrated the occasion with five runs in the seventh inning for a comeback win over the Marlins. T. J. Rivera homered in the bottom of the first and hit a two-run double that tied the game in the seventh. Wilmer Flores later drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the run that put the Mets ahead to stay.

This was Terry Collins' 1,013th game as Mets manager, putting him ahead of Davey Johnson for the team's all-time record. The Mets came away with a victory, but not without a scare. They were ahead by five runs in the ninth inning when the Angels scored three times and then had the bases loaded with two outs. Addison Reed struck out the final batter to stop the rally and end the game.

What a hitting display the Angels put on in this game! They hit for a home run cycle with each of their four homers coming with a different number of runners on base. It started with C. J. Cron's grand slam in the top of the first. In the second, Mike Trout had a two-run blast that was followed immediately by Jefry Marte's solo home run. Andrelton Simmons connected for a three-run shot in the seventh to complete the cycle of homers. The Mets, meanwhile, had three home runs of their own which didn't quite measure up to the Angels' output.

We went to this game with tickets won in a raffle - nice ticket in Section 125 a little down the line from 3B. Unfortunately the Mets had virtually no offense except for the Flores homer. Wheeler kept them in the game. Other than the final score, it was a nice afternoon.

Jacob deGrom hit his first major league home run in this game. He led off the third inning with a drive off Washington's Joe Ross that landed over the left field wall. The Mets then scored four more runs for a victory on Father's Day at Citi Field.

The homer by deGrom created an amazing case of deja vu. It came exactly 45 years after Tom Seaver slugged a home run to give the Mets the lead for good in a win over the Reds. Not only did Jacob's and Tom's homers come on the same calendar date, but they were both hit against pitchers named Ross (Seaver connected off Cincinnati's Ross Grimsley) on a Father's Day afternoon. Also, the uniform numbers of #48 deGrom and #41 Seaver were the same for Grimsley and Joe Ross, respectively. The baseball gods can present themselves in mysterious ways!

Steven Matz came through with seven shutout innings in a blanking of the Marlins. On the same date two years earlier, Matz had his outstanding major league debut in which he drove in four runs and singlehandedly led the Mets to victory.

Watching Jose Reyes dive into first base with the walk off hit was a nice ending which has been in short supply this year. For some reason the Cards pitcher watched the play before deciding to cover first. Jose still has some speed left.

Went to my second walk off win in three days this week. Excellent come back with Wilmer once again crushing one to end it. Even in a disappointing season there are great games.

This was the night Howie Rose legitimately complained on the air about the unnecessary delayed start of the game, which was supposed to be 1:00 in the afternoon. Game time got pushed back seven hours because of the “network stooge” that believes a national TV audience is more important than the locals on hand who actually pay money for tickets. Inconveniencing the real fans in this manner is not good for baseball or any other sport. Howie was right when he gave some hell to that Evil Source of Pathetic Nonsense that believes a national TV audience is more important than the locals on hand who actually pay money for tickets.

Not a good game for two players. Conforto went down with a shoulder injury after swinging and missing. Wilmer Flores made a bonehead fielding play that cost the Mets a run, he struck out with the bases loaded and popped out with the winning run on first and the tying run on third to end the game.

A fitting end to the Terry Collins era. Noah started and pitched two hitless innings, but then Chris Flexen and Rafael Montero got shelled, which padded the Mets' second worst 5.01 staff ERA in the history of the franchise.

Having the second worst franchise ERA (only the '62 staff with a 5.04 ERA were worse) was quite ironic considering the fact that 2017 was the only year that the pitching staff of Harvey, deGrom, Wheeler, and Matz had a full season together and all of them (except deGrom) were awful, with Montero, Gsellman, and Lugo adding to the misery. Lugo actually had the second-best ERA of 4.71

I won't retype the others' sad stats here. The performance of the 2017 pitching staff goes to show that life (and Mets prospects career projections) rarely turns out they way you think it will.

Last note regarding this lost season. For arguably the worst starting lineup in Mets history, check out the box score for this game.
