We had Tidewater Tides season tickets when I was about 13. Our seats were right along the first base side on the first row, just above the bullpen, which was in foul territory. My dad was not shy, and we got to know some of the guys. Ike Hampton was really nice and gave me his old catcher's mitt. My Pony League catcher used it (I was a pitcher). It had parallel slits in the pocket where the ball would hit, and the stitches eventually wore through the leather. Also, if a ball were caught anywhere on that mitt, it was so supple and broken in that the ball would sort of suction into the pocket. Good times at Met Park watching all those guys, Roy Staiger, Don Hahn, Bruce Boisclair, Ron McDonald.
