Had some good years with the Padres in the mid 70's but by the time he came to the Mets he had for some reason lost his control.

I remember Butch pitching for us, I remember thinking that he had a windup similar to Luis Tiant. I see he was traded to the Phillies on 7/4/78 but I guess he never made it with them. Shared Rookie of the Year honors with Pat Zachary in '76.

I remember seeing Butch Metzger shagging flies during BP with his glove in his mouth. Which looked pretty comical, and very dangerous.

Butch dominated baseball in Sacramento area for many years. His Dustex team went two seasons without a loss. He still holds a record in the Big Leagues: most games won in a row by a rookie, I think it’s 10 wins in a row. If he still has this record, it will never be broken. He hit a towering foul ball home run at 28&C/Sacramento. He used a wood bat, sounded like a crack of the bat at Candlestick Park in the 70’s. Three straight pitches, I swung and missed at Renfree, I ran back to the dugout like I was still in AA Seniors Little League.

The highlight of my baseball career was hitting a low and away fastball back up the middle for single against against Metzger in high-school baseball. I think I have a right to be proud of that. That was in Sacramento, CA.
