HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:

Ralph Carey
September 4, 2024
Charlie was the son of Leo and Chick Hennessy who were friends of my grandparents Joseph and Mary Gonnella. Joe and Mary had a summer home in Tom’s River New Jersey. I was only about 7 or 8 years old when I met Charlie at my grandparent's house at the NJ shore. My grandmother had saved newspaper sports sections that reported that Charlie had been signed by the Mets in 1962. This was a long time ago -1972 - but to the best of my recollection I was told Charlie was released from the Mets minors for being a “trouble maker.” At that time, there was still segregation. White players in the minors roomed with whites and blacks with blacks. Charlie had a friend who was a black player and insisted that they be allowed to be roomies and that got him released after 16 at bats. Now - we are talking 50 years ago so maybe my memory of the story is off. Or maybe what I was told wasn’t completely true. However, it’s how I remember it. Charlie was a good looking guy and I remember playing wiffle ball with him while he was in his 30s. Our families fell out of touch and I think he died young.
