Though he never pitched in an official game for the Mets, Wegener was given the start in the 1974 Mayor's Trophy Exhibition Game against the Yankees on May 30 at Shea Stadium. Perhaps with a solid showing, he would be called up from AAA Tidewater to help a beleaguered pitching staff. However, after tossing two scoreless innings, the right-hander unfortunately showed he wasn't going to be much help either. After getting two outs in the third, Wegener walked three in a row, then allowed a grand slam to backup infielder Fernando Gonzalez. His final line for the day: 3.1 innings, 3 hits, 7 runs and 5 walks, as the Mets fell to the Yankees, 9-4.
