What did Dick Young mean by claiming that Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee were "too thick" and "a mutual commiseration society?" He makes it appear as if they were some kind of problem for the Mets. Cleon and Tommie were among the team's primary players and the only reason for getting rid of either of them was the racism that existed within the organization. Young goes on to point out some vague information behind the trade of Agee for Rich Chiles, but it all comes down to the fact that an African American was dealt for a white man. Perhaps Chiles was the only one the Mets could get.

I loved Tommie Agee. He was and still is my favorite Met of all time. Not the BEST Met ever but a personal favorite. Agee had a rough first year in NY (1968). The Mets don't win in 69 without #20. After a stellar 1970 season and a strong but injury plagued 1971. Tommie had a rough year in 1972. Hurt again with those knees. I wish they kept Agee for the 1973 pennant run. in '73 He bounced from Houston to STL. Would have like to see Tommie play in another WS for the Mets. MAYBE he could have made a difference just think Mets 1973 WS Champs and Agee retires a 2 time WS champ. Rich Chiles did nothing for the Mets. A big fat ZERO.
