The impressive thing here is the standings listed at the right side of the page. The Mets have the National League's highest winning percentage at .708, surpassed only by the Minnesota Twins' .762 mark. The May 14th game featured was the third of eleven consecutive wins for the team. This streak resulted in a 25-7 Mets record and a .781 percentage for tops in the majors a week later. The Chicago White Sox at .643 were second best at that point of the season.

With Willie Mays on the roster and the team doing so well, life for Mets fans was more grand than Rusty Staub's first-inning slam. Injuries to several key players then took over and slowed the team's progress. The Mets ended the 1972 season in third place for the third year in a row.
