Dick was truly the worst. That's all that needs to be said.

The answer to Dick Young's question about how long Mets fans would be uptight over Tom Seaver is this - too long! For some people, the anger over losing Seaver has lasted to this very day. If it was going to go on for a while, then it should've ended for good when Tom returned to the team in 1983. Upon his getting away again after that season, the team followed up with a seven-year period in which they won more games than any team in baseball. But even with the most successful era in team history coming right after it, folks among the Mets' faithful are still upset about Seaver's second departure. They should not let it bother them so much.

Young states in his column that most fans root for a team and not just one specific player. He's right, but there are several among those who cheer for the Mets that don't want to believe this fact. They seem to think that their team is comprised of Seaver and nobody else, which is not the truth at all. Mets Nation is filled with people who are too attached to the image of "Tom Terrific". He might have been called "The Franchise", but that moniker didn't have any literal meaning. Seaver was only one man on the ball club.
