Dave Kingman's thumb injury destroyed his chance to break Hack Wilson's National League record of 56 home runs in a season. Kingman slugged 32 homers over the Mets' first 93 games of 1976 when he suffered this bad break. When he set the mark in 1930, Wilson hit his 32nd in the Cubs' 95th game of the year. Dave was two games ahead of Wilson's pace in his quest for a new N. L. single-season home run record. Oh, what might have been!
