The guaranteed failure of the Rusty Staub trade for Mickey Lolich is summed up in this article. At 36, Lolich was nowhere near the pitcher he had been with the Tigers. The fact that neither Mickey nor his wife had any desire to stay in New York added to it that much more. For the Mets, the Staub-Lolich deal was made strictly for business reasons and was not meant to improve the team on the field.

The story's last paragraph happens to mention a trade with the Dodgers for a shortstop named Auerbach (whose first name of Rick is not given.) This deal was of even less value since Auerbach never played in a game for the Mets.
