It's interesting that Lolich had used his right as a "5 and 10" man to veto his trade to the Mets. He had a home in Detroit and could've, by his own choice, finished his career in the city where he became successful and well-respected. It took persuasive financial talk from the people in Mets management to lure Mickey to New York. They wanted to rid themselves of Rusty Staub and his hard bargaining, which was the main reason for the deal. It is often said that money talks. That seemed to be the case here.

Also, the tail end of this article mentions the trade of Gene Clines to the Texas Rangers for Joe Lovitto. At the time, I had Lovitto's baseball card (1974 Topps) and thought he looked just like comedian David Brenner. This was somewhat appropriate because the acquisition of Lovitto was a joke. He was released by the Mets during spring training and never played again.
