The real motive of the Rusty Staub trade for Mickey Lolich is pointed out here. It didn't have nearly as much to do with Staub as a player as it did with the business side of things. Rusty had previously held out for a bigger contract, which did not endear him to his superiors. He was also a year away from becoming a "5 and 10" man, which would give him the right to veto any future deal. This was a thought that the team's stingy management just couldn't bear.

The writer tries to make sense of the trade by stating that Lolich would give the Mets another left-hander to counter the rival Pirates' lineup. With Jerry Koosman and Jon Matlack in the rotation, an aging Lolich wasn't bound to enhance that situation.

One laughable thing in this article is that Joe McDonald is quoted as saying that maybe Lolich will play as many years as Staub. Mickey's final game would come six years before Rusty's.
