This article on the trade for Gary Carter defines it as "one-upsmanship" for the Mets over the Yankees, who had just acquired Rickey Henderson. That was not the case at all. It was simply another effective move by Frank Cashen in building a championship team in Queens. The Yanks were never on Cashen's or anyone else's mind.

The Carter deal here was made on December 10th - the thirteenth anniversary of the infamous trade of Nolan Ryan to the Angels. This fact created a unique connection with the Mets' acquisition of Keith Hernandez in '83, which came on June 15th and six years to the day of the "Midnight Massacre" involving Tom Seaver. Hernandez and Carter would eventually lead the Mets to a World Series title. They also served as a special kind of redemption for Met fans in regard to the dates they joined the team.
