All-Star pick Mazzilli: I should be starting
New York Daily News
Wednesday, July 11, 1979

Lee Mazzilli is a 1979 All-Star (he would, in fact, become the first Met to homer in the All-Star game that year) but feels he should be in the starting lineup.

This article is dripping with hubris, starting with the 'I should be starting' headline. Thoughts of Garry Templeton come to mind.

Then there is the eye-roll-inducing quote, "Maybe in four to five years when I'm hitting .210 I'll make the starting team." Who did this guy think he was, Darryl Strawberry?

By the way, I can't help mentioning that while Lee looks great in this photo, when he took the field with his coke bottle glasses, he looked like the biggest nerd in the stadium.

Also, Lee's prediction about hitting .210 wasn't far off. Five years after this article was published, on July 12, 1984, he was hitting .236 for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

To his credit, with his home run in the 1979 All-Star Game, he backed up his cockiness to a degree.

I just wish my man would have lost the glasses.
