Cy Award Surprises Seaver
New York Daily News
Wednesday, October 31, 1973

Unlike 1971, when Tom Seaver expected a Cy Young award that he didn't win, in 1973 he's pleasantly surprised by some good news. He thought that his 19 wins wouldn't be enough.

It's understandable that Tom Seaver was surprised by receiving the 1973 Cy Young Award. He became the first pitcher to be so honored without winning twenty games during the year. The article states that Tom expected the award to go to either the Giants' Ron Bryant (24 wins) or the Expos' Mike Marshall (who led the National League with 31 saves and 73 games finished.) It's something he didn't see coming.

One thing that worked against Marshall may have been that no relief pitcher had ever won the Cy Young up to that time. With the Dodgers a year later, he became the first to do so. As for Bryant (the NL's only 20-game winner of '73), his team had six more victories than the Mets, but finished third in the West Division.

Pitching for a team that wins a championship has not always been considered the most important thing in regard to the Cy Young voting. With Seaver in '73, the Mets' run to the title turned out to be a key factor.
