Jack Lang describes the Mets atmosphere at the time of Tom Seaver's second departure from the team. He vilifies Frank Cashen, just like Seaver fans posting on this website have done over the years. Cashen even admits that he made a mistake and was unhappy about it himself.

But was Cashen's reaction just a cover-up for the way that he and his superiors really felt about what happened? He says that he thought the White Sox, who were coming off a division-winning season, had enough pitching and wouldn't be interested in Seaver. Frank and the owners considered protecting the team's upcoming prospects to be the most important thing. They may have even believed that if Seaver had remained a Met, then his stature on the club could've intervened with the quality of progress being made through the minor leagues already. It's possible that management got its wish when the Sox took Seaver. With the players developed in the farm system, the Mets then went on to their most successful period (1984-1990) in history.

The "brains" just might've been happy about Seaver's exit. They were looking at the future while the rest of the team's followers seemed to be absorbed with the past.
