This article shows the stinginess of Mets management under the old ownership. Kingman was coming off the best season of his career (37 homers despite missing six weeks with an injury) and wanted his salary raised to a specific amount of money. Joe McDonald refused to go so high and asked Dave to sign a contract that had less than his desired total. Kingman could not be blamed for refusing the deal. It was just another case of the team's bosses not wanting to give in to player demands because they were too power hungry.
