METS FANS SHARE THEIR MEMORIES OF THE OCTOBER 1, 2006 GAME:

October 6, 2006
I was in Washington for this game and got to see Frank Robinson make his final speech and his final managerial appearance, after 51 years in professional baseball. As for the Mets, they had a great game, Julio Franco had another nice day, driving in the first run of the game. Probably the funniest part of the experience was the President's Race. At RFK Stadium, they do this thing called the President's Race, where four mascots dressed as presidents with huge heads (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt). In the standings, George Washington and Abe Lincoln each have about 15 wins, and Jefferson has 10, but Teddy Roosevelt has never won a race. So, on the last day, the other presidents stopped and let Teddy race alone to the finish line. However, it took him so long to get there that he got disqualified, so Teddy Roosevelt never won a race at RFK Stadium. This was the one time I ever felt bad for a mascot.
