Billy Beane? Oakland GM Billy Beane? Am I right on this one?

Yes, it is the same Billy Beane. Made Steve Phillips look foolish on those two trades. Beane was the jewel of the organization for a couple of years, but he couldn't play at the major league level. The history of previous Mets jewels like Beane, Shawn Abner, David West, Bill Pulsipher, etc. really has me concerned about Alex Escobar. I hope he really is a player because those previous jewels were all stiffs.

Legend has it, he and Steve Phillips were roommates in the minors.

I don't know if Steve could outplay Billy, but he sure can't out GM him.

During a Saturday afternoon Met loss to the Dodgers in 1985, I was sitting in loge (section 21) when someone yelled out "BILLY BEANE!" The Mets were in a mini-slump at the time and I guess this person thought if Beane was called up, the Mets would get back in the race. Well, the Mets were playing so uncharacteristically bad this game that I thought they needed someone even more powerful. So I yelled out, "HULK HOGAN!" Soon, everyone was yelling a wrestler's name, including Kamala the Ugandan Headhunter. Everyone laughed.

Billy Beane may not have done much with the Mets as a player, but he sure served as the catalyst in turning a bad day at Shea into a somewhat good one.

Mr. Moneyball fired Art Howe after three postseasons in a row. Then we hired Art and... you know. Some wags have chortled that Beane knew what he was doing in letting Howe go, while the Mets were suckers yet again. But until Beane's A's win a pennant without Howe, I won't be inclined to call Beane the genius and Howe the figurehead.

Billy Beane was the best HS athlete in the 1980 draft. Unfortunately he told people he was going to college, so the Mets drafted Straw first and Beane third (I believe John Gibbons was 2nd). Billy never turned out to be the great player he was projected to be. In the winter of 1985 the Mets traded to the Twins with Billy Latham for Timmy Teufel. His playing career ended soon after that and he realized he was really suited for the front office.

On September 23rd, 2011: A brand new baseball movie called "MONEYBALL" will be released with Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane; Jonah Hill as his assistant and the great Phillip Seymour Hoffman (FYI to my fellow Mets fans rent "PIRATE RADIO" which has nothing to do with Bob Prince or Pittsburgh; Hoffman is SUPERB as the Count) playing Art Howe of all people. This is one of two movies I am looking forward to this fall, the other being a remake of "Footloose".
