This guy was one strange duck. He had some nasty pitches, and looked like he could contribute from the bullpen. I remember that he was known for eating lizards! The last I heard of him, he was implicated in a murder (?) in his home country, and was wanted by the authorities there.

I remember Julio being called "Iguana Man" and I also remember that he was wanted for murder in Venezuela (or some South American country).

He looked like a great guy out of the bullpen and was a real character as the iguana man for his eating habits. It turned out in one off season he got into a fight with someone I think it was over a car accident and ended up pulling out a gun and killing the person. He'll be lucky to get iguana meat in that Venezualan jail cell.

Julio Machado update Winter 2000 from baseballamerica.net

"Righthander Julio Machado returned to play for Zulia at the end of the Venezuelan League season, after spending nearly four years in prison. Machado, 34, pitched for the Mets and Brewers from 1989-91 and was considered a top prospect as a reliever. But his major league career ended abruptly when he admitted to fatally shooting a woman in Venezuela in December 1991. He continued to pitch in the Venezuelan League from 1992-96 as the case went through the courts, often to cries of "assassin" from opposing fans. He was finally sentenced in 1996 and served almost four years before being released early for good behavior in late December. While in prison, he organized a baseball league among the inmates. He hopes to pitch this summer in Mexico, Taiwan or Korea."

I love the part where he organized a baseball league among the prison inmates. Hey Strawberry, you can start a league now, too.

4 years for murder? That's a sweet deal. So how can I get Roger Clemmens to Venezuela?

I am trying to resume my professional career again in organized baseball. I am hoping to sign a contract with an affilated team with the hopes of getting a big league invite for spring training 2002. I know that I haven't been around in quite a while but I am back and better than ever.

My best memory of Machado is of the time Gary Cohen and Murph are on the air and Gary says that Machado eats iguanas.
Gary: He says they taste just like chicken.
Murph: Then he won't mind if I order chicken.

I remember one of my best friends would call himself "Machado" when he was pitching stickball in my backyard... Machado had some nasty nasty stuff, but apparently that nasty stuff was matched by a nastier personality.

I mainly remember Machado as a Brewer. That guy had one mean fastball and a nasty slider to go along with it. It's a shame he ruined his career and life over something so petty. If he really can pitch the way he did back in the early 90's, I hope the Mets can see into getting him back.

Why did I spend $2 on this guy's 1990 Topps Rookie card?!?!

Who could forget my mother saying "Machado to Mercado" over and over again on the way to a double-header in 1989.

Julio was a great guy, I worked in the clubhouse for a season and he had me go to the pet store before a home stand and get 2-3 Iguanas to slay for his pre-game meal. Initially I was a bit disgusted by seeing him chop off their heads, but grew to love the taste, and still do to this day! Now my family doesn't always agree with my love of the Iguana, but has come around and we had a fried Iguana on the table at thanksgiving this year(along with a turkey of course!!) Thanks Julio, you are missed, but I am passing your love of eating scaly creatures to many! I remember him saying "They look like little f***ing dinosaurs man! It's like eating a dinosaur!"
