Back at Norfolk (2001) trying to hang on for emergency starter, long reliever role vacated by Pat Mahomes. Good Luck Pete.

I saw him last night in the game versus Florida. He was great in relief of Bruce Chen, who was horrible. Chen only lasted the first third of the first inning, then they bring in Walker, who pitched 4 2/3 innings, only giving up one run.

Funny commercial here in Tides country at the beginning of the 2002 season: "Hi, I'm Pete Walker, formerly of the Norfolk Tides. Now that I'm in the big leagues I don't have to worry about my contact lenses slipping off because I've had Lasik eye surgery..." The thing was, he was still down in AAA with the Tides, weeks away from his call-up. Kinda presumptuous, no? He's said to be a real nice fellow, though.

The Mets had a choice this year coming out of Spring Training of keeping Walker, who had a huge spring, or Satoru "Japanese Mike Maddux" Komiyama on the major league roster. First mistake, they kept Komiyama. Walker went down to AAA and was finally called up in late April. He pitched one inning, and then was designated for assignment, which was the second mistake. While Komiyama became a joke in a Mets uniform, Pete Walker was in the process of winning 10 games with the Blue Jays. Nice going, Steve Phillips. Keep the garbage Japanese pitcher, who the Mets just declined the option on, and give up the serviceable major league pitcher. Good job, Steve.

Pete Walker hadn't done anything worthwhile in his career to compel the Mets to hold onto him in 2002.

Had Komiyama been given the consistent opportunities to pitch that Walker was afforded with the Blue Jays, Komiyama would have the modest success Pete Walker had, and if Walker was left to rot in the pen, he would look like garbage himself.

Pete Walker is the pitching coach here in NH for the NH Fisher Cats (AA Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays). Nice guy and a good coach.
