May 19, 2006 Swisher's career was fairly un-notable. In fact, I often confuse him with the similarly named Steve Springer, who had an AB or two with the Mets in the early 90s. Swisher coached some pretty lousy teams for the Mets, and kind of vanished into obscurity. His current claim to fame now, however is that his son, Nick "Moneyball" Swisher, has been tearing it up for the A's at the current time.
August 13, 2006 I was a grad assistant with the Ohio University baseball team and our roster had two catchers - Steve Swisher and Bob Brenly, either of whom could have started in any program in the country.
I'll never forget one game when the tying run got on and Steve from the on deck circle said, "It's over", ran up to the batter's box and promptly lined the game winner off the Convocation Center wall some 30 feet behind the fence in the left-center power alley.
His son Nick has Steve's drive and love of the game. Luckily for Nick, he's in an environment (Oakland) that should accelerate his development.
October 14, 2006 Funny how small the world is. I remember Steve Swisher mainly as a basketball player at Ohio Univ.!
