Darrell was apparently a favorite of Lou Gorman. He started managing in the Baltimore system when Gorman was director of minor league scouting. After tasting brief success with the mid-decade Red Sox, Johnson was hired to manage the Mariners by Gorman, who was the team's first GM. He originally came to the Mets system as a major league scout when Gorman was the team's VP of baseball operations.

There's some good Darrell Johnson reading in Bill Lee's book, The Wrong Stuff.

Darrell spent ten years in the Mets system anonymously and died a year ago today. Rest in peace.

When The Rally began in Game Six, '86, Keith yelled to everyone in the clubhouse, "EVERYBODY FREEZE!" In that clubhouse, freezing along with everyone else, was the legendary manager of the 1975 Red Sox, Darrell Johnson, who was a Mets scout at the time. Johnson later joined the coaching staff of the 1993 Mets - my all-time favorite bad team.

I am very proud of my father's accomplishments. If you feel he was a great Manager/Scout, he was even better as a father! I miss him and my mom very, very much.
