HERE IS WHAT OTHER METS FANS HAVE TO SAY:
August 23, 2011 One of the stranger front office characters in the history of one of the strangest MLB teams. As an assistant GM in the 80's, Joe McIlvaine made good deals that helped build the 1986 team and bad deals that helped wreck it. Then, after they bottomed out under Al Harazin, the Mets hired him again, this time as GM. During the next four seasons (1993-96), the Mets floundered under manager Dallas Green. Then, after firing Green, they finally showed signs of life in 1997. So what do the Mets do? They fire McIlvaine! Something about him not being Wilponzi's type of GM, whatever that means (I shudder to think about it). Not long after his dismissal, McIlvaine, a seminarian who once thought about becoming a priest, was arrested for indecent exposure.
