I also happen to be Rich Puig (and I'm not kidding, but people did ask me in the mid-70's if I played for the Mets), just a different Rich Puig - but I did grow up about 2 miles from Shea Stadium and I AM a current Mets fan!

Anyway, our family pronounces the name PYOO-ig.

Rich Puig (pronounced PWIG, rhymes with twig) was a good player for the Pomapno Beach Mets when I used to go to Florida State League games (single-A) in the early 70's. I didn't know he actually ever made it to the big leagues and this is the first time I've heard his name in a least 20 years. I still have a signed team picture of the 1970 Pompano Beach Mets, and there is the fabulous Rich Puig in all his glory.

I just stumbled on this site, and can't believe anyone remembers Rick Puig. I was a Florida State League fan until they were pushed out of South Florida and I remember the Pompano Mets, as well as the Pompano Cubs, the Ft. Lauderdale Yankees, West Palm Beach Expos, and the Miami Marlins/Orioles. I remember Rick Puig (I confirm, it's pronounced PWIG), it was in 1971 I saw him, since I did not get my first driver's license until around the time school began in 1970, making it too late to "Meet the Mets" for that year. He was one of the fan faves (especially the girls) in '71, along with Brock Pemberton, with his slightly disjointed arm (from a cycle crash).

I remember Rich playing high school ball in Tampa. I played at Plant High and could recall his great play and knew by the way he carried himself at such a young age, that he would someday make the show. Too bad it didn't last longer. Wonder what actually happened?

Why not "Rick Puig"? That was how he was announced at the park, by Doug Pett.

I had the privilege to have coached Rickey at Hillsborough High School, Tampa, FL. 1971 First-Round Draft 16th pick. OUTSTANDING PERSON and super smooth 2nd basement with excellent pop in his bat. Excellent teammate and a leader by example.

It’s funny that while I was showing my 7 year old grandson that I had a cousin who play in the MLB for the Mets. In doing so I ran across these comments. We called him Rickey Puig. His father and my grandfather (Rene Puig) were brothers. So he is my mothers first cousin. Although I was raised in Jacksonville, we are all from Tampa. My sister, Kim Roque, graduated from Hillsborough HS as well. Rickey 4 years older than her and 6 older than me. But, remember even as a kid when he played and my grandfather was so proud of him and bragged on him all the time. Thanks for the memories!
